Built by visionary Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Hundertwasser rejects the straight line entirely. The undulating façade is a riot of cobalt blue, sunshine yellow, and brick-red patches, crowned with rooftop gardens where trees sprout directly from living room windows.
There is also the Hundertwasser Village across the street, a converted tire workshop turned shopping center, don't miss its subterranean "Toilet of Modern Art". Entry requires a small coin fee (typically around €0.50–€1.00), which acts as a ticket to see this quirky subterranean installation.
A short walk brings you to the vibrant Kunst Haus Wien, also masterfully designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Featuring uneven mosaic floors and lush living trees, this playful landmark showcases his visionary art and environmental philosophy as a museum.
Insider Tip: You can visit Café Friedlich without buying a ticket to the museum. Set in a lush courtyard, this relaxed café embodies Hundertwasser’s philosophy with curved contours and eclectic furniture. Even the bathrooms are design highlights - so visit just to admire their undulating tilework, irregular colored ceramic mosaics, and wavy mirrors.
