Why Kyushu Belongs at the Top of Your Japan Travel List
Japan's southernmost main island feels different from the moment you arrive.
Kyushu is shaped by powerful natural forces. Active volcanoes rise above fertile valleys. Ancient forests cover mountain slopes. Steam drifts from thousands of hot springs scattered across the region. Compared to the fast pace of Tokyo or Osaka, Kyushu invites a slower way of travelling.
One of the best ways to experience this landscape is by train.
JR Kyushu's famous Design & Story (D&S) trains transform transportation into part of the adventure itself. Large panoramic windows, beautifully crafted interiors and carefully curated regional food allow travellers to experience the changing scenery at a pace that feels intentional.

Here are three of our favourite scenic train journeys in Kyushu.
1. Yufuin no Mori: The Forest Resort on Wheels
Route: Hakata (Fukuoka) → Yufuin via the Kyudai Main Line
Journey Time: Approximately 2 hours 15 minutes
Best for: Hot spring lovers, mountain scenery and classic railway nostalgia

A Train Designed for Slow Travel
Introduced as JR Kyushu's first sightseeing train, Yufuin no Mori remains one of Japan's most beloved rail experiences.
Its deep forest-green exterior stands out immediately. Inside, warm timber finishes, brass details and large observation windows create the atmosphere of a classic mountain lodge. The train feels less like public transport and more like a moving retreat through the countryside.
Highlights Along the Route
The journey winds through northern Kyushu's rolling mountains, forests and river valleys.
Some of the most memorable sights include:
- The twin Jiro-Maru and Taro-Maru waterfalls
- The Mino mountain range between Kurume and Hita
- Jion Falls near Kita-Yamada
- The historic Bungo Mori Roundhouse, one of Kyushu's most distinctive railway landmarks
The train slows at several scenic points, giving passengers time to fully appreciate the views and take photographs.
What to Eat On Board
Instead of a standard station bento, visit the lounge car for regional treats and local drinks.
A popular choice is the famous Swiss roll from Yufuin's B-Speak bakery. Its light texture and delicate flavour have earned a loyal following throughout Japan. Pair it with a locally brewed craft beer for a relaxed afternoon on the rails.
Travel Tip: Choose seats on the C and D side of the carriage for some of the best scenery during the journey.
2. Aso Boy!: Through the Heart of Japan's Largest Volcanic Landscape
Route A: Kumamoto → Aso
Journey Time: Approximately 1 hour 10 minutes
Route B: Beppu → Aso
Journey Time: Approximately 2 hours
Best for: Families, volcanic landscapes and dramatic mountain views

Playful Design Meets Spectacular Scenery
The name "Aso Boy!" comes from both Mount Aso and the Japanese phrase asobō, meaning "let's play".
Although the train is popular with families, its design appeals to travellers of all ages. The interiors combine playful details with thoughtful craftsmanship. White leather seating, reading corners, observation lounges and panoramic viewing areas create a surprisingly sophisticated atmosphere.
The train's mascot, Aso Kuroemon, affectionately known as Kuro-chan, appears throughout the train. One of the most distinctive features is the all-white "Kuro" carriage.
Families especially love the White Kuro-chan Seats. These elevated child-sized seats sit beside standard adult seats, allowing younger travellers to enjoy uninterrupted views through the large windows.

The Scenic Highlights
The journey climbs into the vast Aso Caldera, one of the largest volcanic calderas in the world.
As the train ascends through the mountains, passengers are treated to sweeping views of grasslands, volcanic ridges and open highland landscapes. The route uses a rare switchback system to navigate the steep terrain, adding another layer of railway interest for enthusiasts.
Local Flavours On Board
The café focuses on ingredients sourced from the fertile Aso region.
Popular treats include:
- Kuro-themed milk puddings
- Seasonal local ice creams
- Regional snacks showcasing Kyushu produce
The dairy products are particularly noteworthy, thanks to the area's rich volcanic soil and thriving farming communities.
Travel Tip: Families should book seats in Car 3. The dedicated family carriage includes a play area, picture book corner and a traditional tatami-style space where children can relax during the journey.

3. Kawasemi Yamasemi: Along Rivers, Forests and Hidden Hot Springs
Route: Hakata ↔ Mojikō via the Kagoshima Main Line
Journey Time: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes
Best for: Nature lovers, birdwatchers and travellers seeking a deeper side of Kyushu

Inspired by the Region's Wildlife
Named after two native kingfisher species, Kawasemi Yamasemi celebrates the natural beauty of Kyushu.
The train consists of two beautifully designed cars.
The blue Kawasemi carriage reflects the colours of the Kuma River, while the green Yamasemi carriage represents the forests that blanket the surrounding mountains.
Inside, local cypress and cedar wood create a warm atmosphere that feels connected to the landscapes outside the window.
One of the train's most memorable features is the dedicated observation alcove. A large circular panoramic window and complimentary binoculars allow passengers to watch for birds and wildlife throughout the journey.
Scenic Highlights
The route travels through the heart of the Kuma region, an area surrounded by mountains and known for its dramatic river scenery.
Passengers enjoy uninterrupted views of the Kuma River, one of Japan's most beautiful waterways. The constantly changing landscape of forests, valleys and rivers creates a journey that feels immersive from start to finish.
For travellers with more time, consider extending your visit to nearby Hitoyoshi.
This historic castle town is renowned for:
- Traditional riverside ryokans
- Centuries-old hot springs
- Historic shrines and cultural sites
- Local craft distilleries
A Taste of Southern Kyushu
The onboard buffet showcases regional specialities from across the area.
Highlights include:
- Ibusuki Onsen Cider
- Ibu-Tama sweet pudding boxes
- Regional bento meals
- Kuma Shochu tasting selections
Few travel experiences feel more connected to a destination than sampling local food and drink while passing through the very landscapes that produced them.
Travel Tip: Don't miss the opportunity to try Kuma Shochu. This traditional rice spirit has been produced in the region for centuries and remains one of Kyushu's most distinctive local drinks.

Planning Your JR Kyushu Scenic Rail Adventure
JR Kyushu's Design & Story trains are among Japan's most sought-after rail experiences. Many services operate on limited schedules and can sell out quickly, particularly during spring blossom season and autumn foliage season.
Reservations open one month before departure, and booking as early as possible is highly recommended.
For travellers looking to experience a quieter side of Japan, these train journeys offer something increasingly rare: the chance to slow down, settle into the landscape and enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
If you're planning a trip to Kyushu, our Japan specialists can help design a tailor-made itinerary combining scenic rail journeys, hot spring stays, cultural experiences and lesser-known destinations across the island.
