Austria’s musical heritage has always drawn travelers from across the globe, but the cultural calendar is reaching a high note. Salzburg has introduced a major attraction with a new Sound of Music Salzburg museum.

The museum is located within Hellbrunn Palace—commissioned in the early 1600s by Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus as an Italian-style summer pleasure estate—has long been a staple on the Sound of Music trail as the setting of the glass gazebo from "Sixteen Going on Seventeen".

Now, the palace's restored historic outbuildings—including the Hunting Lodge (Jägerhaus), Coach House (Remise), and Zookeeper’s Lodge (Tierwärterhaus)—host a permanent multimedia exhibition celebrating both the cinematic masterpiece and the real Trapp family history.

The museum intentionally contrasts the Rodgers & Hammerstein narrative with the authentic history of the Trapp family. You will learn the true story of Georg von Trapp—not the stern, whistle-blowing disciplinarian Christopher Plummer portrayed, but a dedicated father and decorated Austro-Hungarian naval commander—and hear family perspectives directly from descendants like Elisabeth von Trapp.
