Itinerary
Day 1 - Thursday, 11th December - Arrival in Paro, Drive to Thimphu
Drive Time ~1.5 hour
Welcome to Bhutan—the Land of the Thunder Dragon. A place of mystique, tradition, and soaring Himalayan beauty, it offers the perfect canvas for any photographer.
Your arrival into Paro is a visual feast in itself. The descent into one of the world’s most dramatic airports offers sweeping views of terraced fields, ancient fortresses, and the emerald folds of Paro Valley.
After a warm welcome from your guide, we set off for Thimphu, Bhutan’s lively capital. Upon arrival, check in at the Bhutan Peaceful Residency & Spa.
This evening, enjoy a welcome dinner after a relaxed stroll through Thimphu town. Over dinner, we will introduce you to the photographic themes ahead—from sacred spaces to natural wonders and intimate portraits of local life. We’ll also cover important photography etiquette and guidelines for capturing Bhutan respectfully and authentically.
Day 2 - Friday, 12th December - Thimphu

Today, we immerse ourselves in Bhutan’s capital—exploring its living heritage, architecture, and artisanal legacy through your lens.
- National Memorial Chorten: A sacred stupa shimmering with golden spires. Inside, vibrant murals and religious symbolism invite close-up and contemplative photography.
- Tashichho Dzong: Seat of the King and the monastic body, this architectural marvel combines spiritual gravitas with intricate artistry. Wide courtyards and detailed woodwork make for compelling compositions.
- Motithang Takin Preserve: A chance to photograph Bhutan’s enigmatic national animal in a peaceful forest setting, along with glimpses of winter-active wildlife.
- Kaja Throm Farmers Market: A lively showcase of Bhutanese produce, culture, and community. Colorful stalls, cheerful vendors, and regional specialties make for rich, spontaneous photo opportunities.
- Gyalyum Charitable Trust Craft Gallery: Handwoven textiles, masks, and wood carvings offer texture, tradition, and narrative detail—each piece supporting local artisans and community initiatives.

Day 3 - Saturday, 13th December - Enroute to Gangtey, Visit Dochula Pass Festival and Punakha
Drive Time ~4 hours
- Dochula Pass & Druk Wangyel Tshechu: Ascend to 3,100 metres and witness a rare winter festival performed by the Royal Bhutan Army. Set amidst 108 chortens and snow-kissed Himalayan peaks, this Tshechu is a powerful celebration of unity and devotion—offering vivid, high-altitude imagery framed by fluttering prayer flags.
- Punakha Dzong: Known as "The Palace of Great Happiness," this riverside masterpiece combines spiritual significance with architectural splendor. Capture its reflection in the tranquil waters where two rivers meet.
- Pho Chhu Suspension Bridge: Cross Bhutan’s longest suspension bridge—an exhilarating experience with sweeping views of the valley and Punakha Dzong below.
- Arrival in Gangtey: Journey onward to the pristine Phobjikha Valley, home to the endangered black-necked cranes. Settle into your stay at Gangtey Tent Resort, a destination that redefines the concept of glamping, offering guests a luxurious and immersive camping experience.
Day 4 - Sunday, 14th December - Gangtey
Today, take a slower pace as we dive into nature, conservation, and the unique rhythm of life in the Phobjikha Valley.
- Gangtey Nature Trail: An easy hike through a glacial valley framed by traditional farmhouses, sleepy hamlets, and sweeping mountain views.
- Black-Necked Crane Information Centre: Learn about these endangered birds and their cultural significance. The cranes are incredibly special due to their symbolic connection to Bhutanese culture, representing peace and longevity. Capturing these majestic birds against the backdrop of Bhutan’s pristine landscapes pays homage to their cultural significance, making each photograph a powerful reminder of this endangered species and the need for conservation.
Astrophotography Session: As darkness falls, prepare your tripods for a celestial spectacle. With crystal-clear skies and almost no light pollution, Gangtey becomes a perfect stage for photographing the cosmos—stars, galaxies, and monasteries cloaked in moonlight.
Day 5 - Monday, 15th December - Gangtey to Paro

Our journey takes us back to Paro, a valley rich in history and home to some of Bhutan’s most cherished landmarks.
Kyichu Lhakhang: Begin your exploration with the tranquil Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest temples, dating back over 1,300 years. Stroll through its peaceful courtyards and visit the adjacent museum dedicated to the revered Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche.
National Museum of Bhutan: Once a 17th-century watchtower guarding the Paro Dzong, the National Museum now offers a captivating insight into Bhutan's cultural heritage. Inside, discover an impressive collection of ancient artifacts, thangka paintings, ritual objects, and rare stamps. From sacred relics to exhibits on natural history, the museum invites you to immerse yourself in the kingdom's rich artistry, spirituality, and storytelling.
Paro Dzong (Rinpung Dzong): Visit the grand Paro Dzong, built in 1646, standing majestically above the town. Connected by a traditional cantilever bridge, wander through its stone-paved paths, admire its imposing walls, and take in the intricate frescoes and the tranquil presence of resident monks.
